Solar panels: Buying guide
Begin with the device you want to charge and how the panel will be used. A panel suitable for carrying on a trip may not suit permanent mounting, even at the same advertised wattage.
Choose for the way you use it
Camping and travel
Check folded size, transport weight and setup method. Think about shade, cable length and whether you can reposition the panel during the day.
Fixed installation
Check dimensions, mounting compatibility and the intended environment. Allow for a suitable controller and installation method rather than buying only on panel power.
Charging a station
Check the station’s voltage, current and connector limits against the exact panel. Verify required cables and adapters before comparing charge-time claims.
What to check
Power
the advertised watts describe rated output under test conditions. Shade, orientation and temperature change real production; compare panel type and dimensions too.
Voltage
match open-circuit voltage and current to the charge controller or station input. Equal wattage does not make two panels interchangeable.
Weight
check mounting method, dimensions and transport requirements. Verify included connectors and cables; a panel is not a complete storage system.
Your final shortlist
- Write down two essential needs and one acceptable compromise. Eliminate products that fail an essential requirement, even if another number looks impressive.
- Compare the exact variant and what is included: regional version, accessories, connections and compatibility with the equipment you already own.
- Check the total cost, return conditions, warranty and replacement parts. Save the product reference so a similar name does not lead you to another version.
Examples from the catalog
These two catalog models illustrate a specification comparison. They are not a ranking of the whole market or recommendations for every use and budget.
Questions before buying
Why is actual output below the advertised watts?
The rating refers to defined test conditions. Temperature, angle, shading and sunlight change production; the rating is not a promise of constant output throughout the day.
What if a specification is missing?
Do not treat a blank as zero or assume another variant’s feature applies. Open the product details, check the exact reference and ask the retailer for the missing information before deciding.

Storage: check usable space, memory-card support and the size of your photos, apps and videos. The operating system uses part of the advertised capacity.

Suction: compare declared pressure carefully; Pa alone does not measure cleaning performance. Brush design, airflow and the floor type also affect pickup.

Power: distinguish actual electrical consumption from an equivalent-watt marketing claim. More input power does not alone establish the useful light reaching the plants.
