Vacuum cleaners: Buying guide

Start with your floors, furniture and cleaning routine. Robot, cordless and other vacuum types solve different jobs; a single suction figure cannot tell you which will be easiest to live with.

Choose for the way you use it

Hard floors

Check pickup around edges and furniture, bin handling and the brush type. If mopping is included, verify what must still be cleaned manually.

Carpets and pet hair

Look at the powered brush, hair removal and filter care. Compare cleaning evidence on similar carpets instead of relying only on pressure in Pa.

Automation

For robot models, check thresholds, mapping, obstacles and the dock footprint. A dock still needs consumables, cleaning and enough access space.

What to check

Suction

compare declared pressure carefully; Pa alone does not measure cleaning performance. Brush design, airflow and the floor type also affect pickup.

Runtime

check the power mode used for the advertised duration. A maximum runtime may refer to the lowest setting and exclude motorised accessories.

Container

compare usable dust capacity, filter cleaning and consumable availability. For robot models also check navigation, thresholds and access under furniture.

Your final shortlist

  1. Write down two essential needs and one acceptable compromise. Eliminate products that fail an essential requirement, even if another number looks impressive.
  2. Compare the exact variant and what is included: regional version, accessories, connections and compatibility with the equipment you already own.
  3. Check the total cost, return conditions, warranty and replacement parts. Save the product reference so a similar name does not lead you to another version.

These two catalog models illustrate a specification comparison. They are not a ranking of the whole market or recommendations for every use and budget.

Questions before buying

Does more Pa always mean better cleaning?

No. Airflow, brush contact, sealing and floor type all matter. Pressure alone does not show how well a vacuum picks up embedded dirt or avoids tangling.

What if a specification is missing?

Do not treat a blank as zero or assume another variant’s feature applies. Open the product details, check the exact reference and ask the retailer for the missing information before deciding.
